Big Idea: The Lord’s Supper is not merely a ritual. It is the central act
of Christian worship. In observing it we proclaim the Gospel, rejoice in
the New covenant promises and profess love for God and each other.
I. HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT TO DO?
A. The ESSENTIAL requirements:
1. COMMANDED by Christ
2. PRACTISED by the early church
3. EXPLAINED in the epistles
B. Two ordinances:
1. Baptism = INITIATORY = ONE time event
2. Lord’s Supper = CONTINUANCE in = REPEATED event
II. WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COMMUNION?
A. It was instituted during PASSOVER
1. Both are MEMORIALS
a. Passover = deliverance from
b. Lord’s Supper = deliverance from sin, Satan, death
2. Both are ANTICIPATORY
a. Passover = Perfect Lamb, Unblemished Lamb
b. Lord’s Supper = Second Coming
3. Both involve BREAD
4. Both involve BLOOD
B. It takes the place of PASSOVER
C. It is an expression of FELLOWSHIP
1. With the LORD
2. With other BELIEVERS
D. It is a PROCLAMATION
III. WHO IS IT FOR?
A. It is ONLY for believers
B. It is for ALL believers
C. It is an OBLIGATION for every believer
